the midst of a world that would destroy most of us. It is a story of one abused and impoverished African American girl who is faced with so much turmoil
and pain that we are left to wonder what keeps her dreaming and hoping. Interestingly enough, Sapphire has presented us with a young woman who is not only ignored and
pushed aside by a school system, but also a young woman who is given hope by the school system. Bearing this apparently conflicting reality in mind, we present the following
paper which examines how Sapphire presents the New York public school system in her novel "Push." The School System As mentioned, the school system in this particular novel
is responsible for ignoring the main character, Precious, as she grows and tries to develop. Precious is a young woman who, at the age of thirteen, was pushed aside in
the education system due to the fact that she was pregnant, and pregnant with her fathers child at that. She was held back and as such, by the time she
was 16, and pregnant once more with her fathers child, she was only reading second grade level, largely illiterate. Now, it should be noted that the educational institution in
this novel is located in the inner city of New York, within Harlem, where the education is not up to the standards of the rest of the country, or much
of the country. Precious is not necessarily a rare case, and is merely one victim of the system where she is ignored due to her condition. Sapphire clearly illustrates that
the system, in regards to the teachers and those who work within the specific schools, have little choice but to push one such as Precious aside. There is no funding
