fire alarm went off, or cases where people would jump out of buildings rather than face the ravages of an out of control blaze. While fire extinguishers work well on small fires, for large ones in massive buildings, there is a reliance on fire systems. There has in fact been a new development in terms of fire depression systems and it has even made the rounds on the talk show circuit. In fact, Ansul has released something that is seen as an alternative to Halon, which is called the Sapphire Fire Suppression System ("Fire Suppression," 2003). Halon came on the market during the 1960s and while seen as a wonderful alternative to CO2 and other systems, as it was viewed as more effective, it was later learned that halon depletes the ozone ("A Short History," 2003). Because of this, it is not in widespread use, or at least new systems are not created. While it may no longer be a desirable method of firefighting, the maintenance of a Halon system is not illegal (2003). Yet, while it is not outlawed in the United States for example, it is illegal in many countries such as Germany (Buchmann, 1999). Thus, one might want to consider replacing Halon systems if possible due to the environmental concerns. The introduction of the Sapphire Fire Suppression System is something that may be used to replace old halon systems that were once viewed as being the height of technology. The new Fire Suppression System makes use of revolutionary technology that draws on a new sustainable chemical agent which will fight fires without actually causing damage to their surroundings ("New Water," 2003). The system is in essence the ideal solution for museums, hospitals, libraries, and telecommunications centers (2003). The system makes use of ...
