This "new imperialism" was the target of much analysis, from political theorists ranging from Lenin to Hobson and many others as well, each with their own perspective on the
hows and whys of this new imperialism as well as the ramifications. Theorists have speculated on the fundamental causes and effects of imperialism, and have thusly commentated on the
overall impact of imperialism as well. Such theorists have determined the positive and/or negative impact of imperialism by commenting on the causes, ranging from greed and economic gain to
nationalism. Therefore, the post-1870 era came to be known as the "age of imperialism", accompanies by many perspectives and explanations. For
instance, Hobson, the well-known British economist, was a very notable theorist on this issue, as was Lenin who followed him (The New Imperialism, 2004). Both Hobson and Lenin believed
that the colonial expansion that was known as the new imperialism was the result of new economic forces in western and central Europe (The New Imperialism, 2004). In other
words, both Hobson and Lenin argued that imperialist motives were essentially reduced to economics (The New Imperialism, 2004). And so, what this meant was that despite religious and/or other
altruistic claims, both of these theorists argued that greed was the fundamental motivation that propelled imperialism (The New Imperialism, 2004). This
theory asserts that governments were always looking for cheap raw materials, and imperialism was the quickest route to this success (The New Imperialism, 2004). Furthermore, imperialism provided imperialist governments
access to new and opportunistic investments, advantageous markets, and various other forms of exploitation that served to benefit the colonizing nation (The New Imperialism, 2004). Hobson referred to this
