say the least. Much of this evolution occurred as a result of the battle between conservative and liberal values. The New Deal Coalition of Franklin Roosevelts time
is viewed by most as embodying liberalism. The New Deal was Roosevelts answer to the Great Depression and the social and economic considerations that era entailed. While
the New Deal would be effective over the short term, it would be the impetus of the welfare state, that economic situation which today is being blamed for a number
of social problems. The so-called New Right would emerge in the mid 1950s wit the leadership of William F. Buckley. As a consequence of the problems associated with
the New Deal Coalition, the New Right would begin to make headway as the New Deal Coalition began to decline in importance.
The influence of the New Deal began a particularly rapid decline between the 1960s to the 1980s. Although it was really an amalgam of liberal and conservative
ideologies, the New Right embodied more conservative political philosophies and regarded many of the developments ushered in by the New Deal as deleterious rather than positive. It is important
to remember, however, that the New Deal emerged in one of the most taxing times of U.S. history. The stock market crash of 1929 and the Great Depression which
was to follow were certainly contributing factors to the New Deal. Historians are often the most non-committal in identifying these causative factors, preferring evidently to remember this time in
history as one of the great unresolved mysteries of the 20th century (Norton, 1997). When they do broach the subject more aggressively they often are vague in their approach
