effects of the Great Depression. The Depression was an unparalleled disaster for America; at its height nearly one-third of the workforce was unemployed. President Franklin Delano Roosevelt (FDR)
made it a priority to get Americans back to work by instituting the New Deal. This paper discusses some of the aspects of those programs. The New Deal -
Labor, Business and Agriculture When the Wall Street "crash" hit in 1929, Franklin D. Roosevelt (FDR) was governor of New York. He "made strenuous attempts to help those without
work" by setting up such agencies as the "New York State Emergency Relief Commission" which he appointed Harry Hopkins to run. (Hopkins would follow Roosevelt into the federal government.)
FDR also recruited Frances Perkins for the post of industrial commissioner, and with the help of these two, "Roosevelt introduced help for the unemployed and those too old to work"
("The New Deal"). FDR was elected to the Presidency in 1932. The first thing FDR did was to "deal with the countrys banking crisis. Since the beginning of the
depression, a fifth of all banks had been forced to close," with the result that nearly 15% of all Americans had lost their savings ("The New Deal"). The people
were beginning to lose faith in the entire banking system, and to prevent a catastrophe, Roosevelt ordered the banks closed ("The New Deal"). He "then asked Congress to pass
legislation which would guarantee that savers would not lose their money if there was another financial crisis" ("The New Deal"). In 1933, Roosevelt "called a special session of Congress"
