Bill Gates, with some information on the people and companies involved with him. Discussion A word about the research: the sources are reputable journals, magazines and books, nothing from the
Internet (which is ironic, come to think of it). But when a figure is this well-known, information tends to repeat in all the articles. It will be interesting to compare
them and see if there are different versions of how Bill Gates got to be Bill Gates, or if they all say pretty much the same thing. The first article
comes from the Master File Premier Database; the author is Keira Stevenson. She writes that at the end of the 20th century, Gates changed the way the world thinks about
computers, and made a fortune doing it (Stevenson). Microsoft products are now found on "nearly 90 percent of all personal computers, a statistic which prompted charges that the company was
an illegal monopoly" (Stevenson 1). Stevenson notes that because of the U.S. Justice Departments antitrust lawsuit against his company, "Gates has recast himself as a philanthropist, emphasizing the work of
the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation" (Stevenson 1). The word "recast" is pejorative, implying that Stevenson thinks his philanthropy is not genuine, but a way to generate good will and
avoid legal sanctions. Well see what others have to say about this, Gates full name is William Henry Gates III and he was born in Seattle, Washington on October 28,
1955 (Stevenson). His family background is not quite the "up from nothing by his own bootstraps" myth that we might think. His father, William Henry Gates Jr., "was a successful
corporate lawyer, and his mother, Mary Maxwell, was chairwoman of United Way International, and served on the executive boards of Pacific Northwest Bell and First Interstate Bank" (Stevenson 1). His
