which had long-ranging implications for the ways in which groups of human beings interacted with the environment, and with each other. Prior to this period, humans had exerted little control over their environment, subsisting on what could be found as opposed to what could be cultivated. The student could point out here that what appears to be a comparatively simple change in lifestyle, that of cultivating crops rather than taking food from the wild, actually has an immense network of ramifications as regard the structure of the community, the importance of choosing settlement areas, domestic architecture and kinship structures. Once a community opts for cultivation, then it is no longer possible to follow a migratory pattern: crops do not move, and therefore the community does not move either. Humans gradually recognised the benefits of exerting control over the environment, in the sense that there was a degree of predictability and stability about crops which could be grown, harvested, improved by selection and so on, and much the same could be found in respect of domesticated animals. However, as Childe (2003) points out, adopting cultivation did not mean that the communitys lifestyle became sedentary, nor was there a total dichotomy between the nomadic and the settled life. Childe notes, for example, that in the nineteenth century the hunting and fishing tribal nations of Canada had permanent villages of wooden houses: it is therefore possible to combine some aspects of the hunter-gatherer model with some of the cultivators.
