Essay / Research Paper Abstract
A 7 page overview of the many negative consequences of unsupervised steroid use. This paper documents the specific physiological dangers of this practice and suggests the problem confronting us as a society is to not only effectively communicate the potentially dangerous aspects of unsupervised steroid use but also to provide an alternative to such practices which has the capacity to captivate young minds and to instill in them the desire to accomplish athletic mastery through more constructive approaches. Bibliography lists 7 sources.

Steroids have both legitimate uses and not-so-legitimate uses. The latter application most often occurs among athletes who desire to positively affect their physical (or even sexual) prowess and/or
appearance. The drug of choice in athletic applications (most often testosterone) falls into the classification of an anabolic-androgenic steroid, those steroids which function in the stimulus of the production
of cellular protein (Kruskemper). This utilization is all too often associated with definitive risks and side effects, a fact which unfortunately is seldom successful in deterring those who are
bent on "improving" their bodies. The negativities of steroid use are even more concerning given that a growing number of those who use them are of high school age,
an age for which it seems to be more and more difficult to effectively intervene in potentially dangerous practices when the predominant mindset is acceptance of that practice. The
problem which confronts us as a society, therefore, is not only effectively communicating the potentially dangerous aspects of unsupervised steroid use but also in providing an alternative to such practices
which has the capacity to captivate young minds and to instill in them the desire to accomplish athletic mastery through more constructive approaches. The growing field of sports psychology
offers us this opportunity. Sports psychology can be used to more effectively communicate the negativities of steroid use as well as to instill more constructive practices such as visualization
and mental rehearsal to improve athletic performance. In essence, both legitimately used steroids and those used in questionable applications can be broken into
two broad chemical categorizations, that of naturally occurring steroids and synthetically produced steroids. All steroidal compounds have the same basic four-ring carbon skeleton. Their molecular structure is made
