knowledge and increasing choice for business and consumers as being primary benefits of the spread of IT. However, if we accept that within individual countries there is the existence of
a data divide, then this same issue must also exist between the rich and the poor nations and the way that IT may be accessed and used (Alvarez and Magana,
2008). Instead of seeing it as a benefit, the perspective of some nations may see it as a barrier and create a greater degree of separation. Even if we consider
the spread and use of information technology and do not consider issues such as access divides, seeing these as only temporary barriers that may be overcomes, there are potential arguments
of the way that IT is impacting on society in negative ways. Friedman (2005) takes an in-depth view of the way that technology has impacted in the global environment,
this is the subject of his 2005 book "The World is Flat" which is a follow up to the book "Lexus and the Olive Tree". There are many books
that focus on the way that changes are foreseen as occurring in the future, but Friedman takes a different approach, he is demonstrating the current influences and the wonders of
the modern world that have already taken place. We can argue it is only by understanding the current situation that the opportunities presented can be seized, resources maximised and a
realistic understanding of the future developed and we may also be able to assess any potential negative impacts. For Friedman a flat world can be equated to a world
that is connected. The ability of companies in different countries to compete has increased and resulted in a flatter playing field, meaning that they find it easier to access markets,
