There have been a slew of debates regarding cloning and other forms of genetic tampering since Dolly was created. But
the dilemma is really nothing new. There have in fact been debates regarding laboratory experiments on human embryos in Britain during the 1980s that drew on images from science fiction
(Mulkay 157). Negative images from science fiction have been used to debate, but such images could be transformed into resources for defending or attacking such scientific experiments (157). Indeed, in
Mary Shelleys Frankenstein, for example, some may argue as to whether or not the pursuit of the transformation is good or bad. Yet, it is not unlike the argument today
on cloning or on changing beings in other ways. Mixing egg and sperm in petri dishes is common practice in infertility clinics today, but it was science fiction at one
time too. Usually, Frankensteins do not erupt from such pursuit, but many moral questions arise. Proponents of both cloning and genetic engineering
claim that advances in the field would enhance quality of life as it could eradicate genetic disease, for example (Castle PG). It can also give childless couples an alternative, one
that would not necessitate involving a party outside of the marriage. One could clone a lost loved one (PG). Of course, that latter suggestion is rather morbid and would not
bring a person back to life. If one loses a child and creates another just like the original, the clone is really a twin with his or her own tastes,
