and the way that it is skewed and argues that to understand crime and the criminal justice system we need to understand society. The US has a very high
crime rate, this is a matter of fact. However, Reiman argues that society is looking for excuses rather than reasons. These may focus on critiques with the way that crime
is handled, such as too soft treatment or to harsh treatment. The stage is life may be cited, as crime is more popular with youth. However, despite all of these
reasons the presence of the criminal justice system and its operation does not appear to have any real impact on their occurrence of crime (Reiman, 2000).
The approach taken by Reimans looks more to the sources rather than the causes of crime. It is only if we can understand the way that
crime emerges in a sociality and its source, that it can be tackled and the criminal justice system changed in order to give a greater equality to those who do
not have the political or economic power (Reiman, 2000). The role if position is important. It is a central feature of the criminal
justice system, those without money or from the lower classes are more likely to end up in prison. This is also a fact (Reiman, 2000). The structures within society that
