haunting Americans for decades. Although there are provisions in place that take care of the health care needs of the most destitute and the elderly in our society, there
has never been a plan in place that addressed the health care needs of the rest of Americans. The more fortunate members of our society, of course, have simply
paid for health care out of their own pockets or via employer provided insurance plans or privately purchased insurance plans. Unfortunately, this has historically resulted in a certain percentage
of Americans that had no health care coverage. The current plan for national health care hopes to address this problem with the provision of a not-for-profit government-run health care
insurance (Lothian, 2009). The problem that emerges, however, is that many Americans feel that there should also be an option for private insurance coverage. This so-called private option
is surrounded by controversy and misunderstanding. Health care reform should definitely include a private option. A private option would do two things. First, it would provide Americans a
choice (Lothian, 2009). That choice would be between participating in the government-run health care insurance or purchasing private coverage (Lothian, 2009). The second consideration that many dont make,
however, regarding the public option is that it would also create competition between the government run health care insurance and the private health insurance companies. Both of these are
beneficial and thus substantiate the contention that health care reform should include a private option. Having a choice is a critical part of American ideology. Few like
