Many components of our marine resources on the edge of extinction. This is unfortunate given that our oceans are fascinating testaments to the complexity and interrelationships of living organisms. They are comprised of a number of interrelated components, each with its own ecological value. Most known for their fisheries the ocean offers a variety of different habitats and species to occupy those habitats. In the open waters of the oceans live a wide diversity of pelagic species, some of the most impressive of which are sharks. Often regarded solely as voracious predators and potentially a threat to man, sharks are not only valuable from an ecological standpoint but also from an economic standpoint. Overfishing, in fact, is responsible for putting many shark species on the edge of extinction. While the various species of sharks could be said to be less sensitive to pollutants and habitat disruptions rendered by man, they are very sensitive to overfishing. Overfishing of their prey results in fewer food sources for the shark and a consequent impact on their population. Sharks are targeted as fishermen as well, however. While this has an obvious effect on the shark species it also has an effect on the biodiversity of the oceans as a whole. There is, therefore, a complex interrelationship between man, sharks, and marine species as a whole. Sharks are valued by both the recreational and commercial fishing industries. Their fins are harvested for use in a variety of products while their skin has become a welcome addition to the leather industry.
