to some extent. It is a lesson of honesty and humility and suffering. The following paper examines the theme of vanity in "The Necklace." "The Necklace" by Guy de
Maupassant In this particular story a woman wants so much to be more than she is. She is young and planning on going to a particular party where she feels
she will find some sort of ultimate happiness. But, that happiness will only be found, she believes, by looking like she is worth more than she is. The following excerpt
from the beginning of the story illustrates this aspect concerning her vanity in identity: "SHE was one of those pretty and charming girls... She was simple...but she was unhappy...She suffered
intensely, feeling herself born for every delicacy and every luxury" (de Maupassant). In this one can see that she wanted to be dressed up pretty, to be wealthy, to elaborate
on her beauty and thus feel she was worthy and adored perhaps. When the party is first presented to her she is dismayed, and also angry it seems, for
she is the sort of woman who would love to go to such an event, but could not possibly go to such without looking regal and wealthy. She does not
possess the wealth, nor does her husband, to dress as though she is someone special. She decides she will borrow a diamond necklace from a friend of theirs who is
