action. This paper takes as a given that affirmative action is a solid program that should be reinstated; the argument it pursues is how best to defend the support of
affirmative action programs. Discussion Soon after his inauguration, President Obama repeated something hed said in the campaign: it is time to take a look at programs that are already in
place and if theyre necessary and effective, leave them alone or perhaps even strengthen them; if they dont work, drop them. Those are the criteria that seem most useful in
arguing in support of affirmative action: Can it be said to be necessary? And is it effective? Wickelgren argues that affirmative action is necessary, and bases his support not on
the value of diversity, or on "any particular conception of fairness or justice" (165). Instead, he argues that the basis for affirmative action is simply that "past discrimination based on
color creates inefficiencies in the economy that persist across generations, making race a relevant characteristic for firms and universities to consider when looking to hire or admit the best candidates"
(Wickelgren 165). Race is still a relevant factor even if the organization knows the "economic status of the candidate" (Wickelgren 165). In other words, even if the only concern of
the university or firm is economic efficiency, "affirmative action based on economic disadvantage does not eliminate the need for affirmative action based on race" (Wickelgren 165). Wickelgren makes what could
