the British Empire and its citizens have been imprisoned by a rigid class structure where privileges were reserved only for the few and not the many. By the nineteenth
century, the Industrial Revolution transformed most Western economies virtually overnight and became increasingly powered by factory assembly lines. However, English society remained surprisingly unaffected. Aristocrats continued living leisurely
on sprawling country estates and thought about high culture and noble causes as they always had, the many were working seven days a week in oppressive working environments and living
in overcrowded urban squalor. The English aristocrats accepted power just as their ancestors had, as if it was their natural right. As long as this power was concentrated
in the hands of the few who were becoming detached from an increasingly working-class society, England and the aristocracy it held so dear was on a collision course for disaster.
As presented in Cecil Woodham-Smiths insightful text, The Reason Why: The Story of the Fatal Charge of the Light Brigade, the highly romanticized debacle of the Crimean War that
took place on October 25, 1854 (the inspiration for Lord Alfred Tennysons famous poem) was caused more by the class structure within than the military ineptitude without. In fact,
the author makes clear that had it not been for aristocratic pride and arrogance, the ill-fated charge might never have taken place. The major determinant of ones status in English
society was wealth, or perhaps more accurately the lack thereof. It was often simply a matter of predestination since the aristocratic class was something to be born into, not
