in a society of human beings. It is perhaps well argued, and known, that humans go to war for a variety of reasons and that war is almost a necessity
of human beings in many respects. This was apparently clearly the case in ancient times. With that in mind the following paper examines three different ancient works concerning war. Those
works are The Iliad, The History of Herodotus and The History of the Peloponnesian War by Thucydides. The paper examines each briefly and the summarizes and discusses them as a
whole in relationship to what can be learned about war and the nature of war. The Nature of War: The Iliad Homers The Iliad is one of the
most famous works in human history and may, or may not, be accurate and real. It is truly one of the only works that address the Trojan War. It speaks
of a great deal of political turmoil and the desires of many to possess one thing or another. The main players are perhaps Achilles, a legendary soldier who seemed all
but invincible and fights against Troy, Agamemnon, who is the King of Mycenae and who leads the army against Troy; Paris, the man who took Helen from Athens and
ultimately started the war, Priam, his father and the king of Troy, and Hector, the other son of Priam. While there are other important players, such as Odysseus, these are
the men who essentially rule the battles and the war. In these men one can see different reasons for war, and different attitudes towards war. For example, Agamemnon seems
to be a man who only wants the spoils and rewards of war. Achilles desires glory, Priam is an honorable man trying to defend his country, and his son Hector
