Social forces may work toward a degree of equilibrium and human beings may want to create a social order that is consistent and steady but the fact remains that there is little consistency in the nature of the world other than the continuing processes of change. of the world other than the continuing processes of change. Social theorists, historians, and others analyzing the human condition understand that change is always occurring but they may not agree
on how and why the change takes place. For example, Karl Marx, Max Weber, and Emile Durkheim each had their own unique perspective regarding change and what influences it. Marx
and Change Karl Marxs (1818-1883) primary dictum, reduced in the most simplistic of terms, was that all events are determined by economic forces. His analysis of capitalist economy and his
theories of historical materialism, the class struggle, and surplus value have become the basis of modern socialist doctrine. Of decisive importance with respect to revolutionary action were his theories on
the nature of the capitalist state, the road to power, and the dictatorship of the proletariat. For Marx, the history of mankind had a double aspect: It was a history
of increasing control of man over nature at the same time as it was a history of the increasing alienation of man. Alienation may be described as a condition in
which men are dominated by forces of their own creation, which confront them as alien powers. The notion is central to all of Marxs earlier philosophical writings and still informs
his later work, although no longer as a philosophical issue but as a social phenomenon. The young Marx asked: In what circumstances do men project their own powers, their own
