personal "vision" in both of these stories moves the reader to consider whether the central relationships are based on a knowledgeable insight, or whether the characters are blind to their
own limitations or inability to achieve intimacy. Both of these stories are written from a culturally defined perspective and underscore the fact that intimacy, though a common goal
in relationships in Western culture, is a difficult thing to unravel, to discover, and the references made by each author suggests that blindness to the qualities of others can
be a mitigating factor in reducing the wiliness to participate in acts of intimacy. The use of sight, for example, in works of literature commonly corresponds with concepts like
reason, rationality and personal insight, while blindness can be a metaphor for a lack of reason or the inability to gain insight into the characteristics of others. Concepts related
to vision, including the presence of light or darkness and the ability to focus on intimate relationships, also demonstrate extensions of these metaphors. The student should consider
