contain appropriate verbs for example. By and large, the learning of English seemed to be just as complex as learning chemistry and while it is said that English is the
most difficult language to learn, it is surprisingly the most prevalent in the world today. While that is the case, many people simply do not write or speak correctly. They
do not know how to properly use punctuation and always confuse those "commonly confused" words like effect and affect. There has been a deterioration of the English language, so
much so that the idea of Ebonics had become an acceptable alternative to learning proper English. To some, ebonics is a way to bridge the gap between proper English
and what is learned on the street (Williams, 1997). To others, it is simply a cop out and merely exacerbates the language problem in America. In the realm of education,
there is much debate in respect to the teaching of proper English. Some say that todays methods are too lax but the predominant line of thinking is that the antiquated
approaches are just too stringent and are actually insufficient. There are many approaches to teaching language as either a second language or a primary language. In elementary schools, the debate
between whole language approaches and phonics for example was battled in many schools around the country. However, while it is true that there are different philosophies in respect to education,
