of the most misunderstood events in contemporary society. When some think of pow wow they think of some sort of serious negotiation. This misperception is more understandable when we consider that from the old westerns to contemporary political speeches we have heard the term "pow wow" used to refer to people getting together to discuss matters of grave concern. Other times we may have heard the term pow wow being described as some sort of important ceremony, maybe even to describe a religious ceremony of some type. Native Americans typically just smirk when they hear such misuses. They know that the pow wow is indeed an important event. It could encompass certain important ceremonies, in fact. Most typically, however, the pow wow is viewed by Native Americans as a social event; as an opportunity for the people gather, to visit, and to celebrate. Some say that the pow wow evolved from ancient rituals (Skenandore, 2004). Others say that it is a relative newcomer in Native American history, that it evolved as much in response to European need and desire as Native need and desire. From this perspective the pow wow evolved in accordance with trade needs. Native peoples and those Europeans that had invaded their lands would come from miles apart, in part, as a commercial venture. After initial contact the Native Americans quickly gained a desire for European manufactured goods manufactured in Europe and other continents and the Europeans sought furs and other resources which the Native Americans were so adept at obtaining from their environment.
