safety in respect to guns, but has a lot of opposition. It is a controversial organization largely because many liberals do not like the concept of guns at all. They
want guns banned. Obviously, the NRA does not want that. Rather, they promote responsible gun ownership for hunting and self-protection. Although guns are not very popular in the world today,
this was not always the case and the NRA has been around since the nineteenth century. Since early in the twentieth century, the NRA has promoted shooting among youth ("A
Brief History of the NRA," 2007). However, the organization was already a phenomenon as it was actually started in 1871 ("A Brief History of the NRA," 2007). The organization would
go on to create rifle clubs at a variety of universities as well as other locations ("A Brief History of the NRA," 2007). It is important to remember that this
was a time before America was significantly populated and there were no school and work shootings to speak of. Rather, there had been a lot of hunting as there was
no such thing as a Supermarket for example. People did hunt not just for recreation, but for food as well. Despite the fact that guns are no longer popular,
NRA continues to support shooting as a youth sport in America ("A Brief History of the NRA," 2007). This is true in spite of opposition as there is also a
powerful lobby for gun control. NRA has always been somewhat politically active. However, it was in 1934 that it created an official niche dubbed the Legislative Affairs Division ("A Brief
History of the NRA," 2007). The organization did not lobby at the time, but the political part of the organization would take shape and members would mail out literature to
