organizations of our contemporary world. This controversy, however, is rooted in the many misperceptions which exist about the organization rather than the true facts regarding its history and mission.
First founded in 1871, the NRA has grown from a fledgling organization with just a few members and little public presence to one with some four million members,
a worldwide presence, and phenomenal political power. The mission of the NRA revolves around the promotion of firearm enjoyment and wildlife conservation. That mission includes the organizations sponsorship
and involvement in a multitude of shooting and hunting events as well as educational events designed to inform the public about their right to own firearms, a right the NRA
contends is guaranteed by the Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. That mission, however, has pitted the NRA against those in our modern world who intend to take firearms
out of the hands of the public, those who contend that the only practical purpose of firearms is detrimental to humans and indeed to all living things. Consequently, the
most visible NRA presence has been in the political arena where it continues to fight for the right to own and bear arms.
The NRA recognizes that the issues surround the right of American citizens to bear arms are heating up on a daily basis. Law abiding citizens are facing greater and greater
regulation regarding gun ownership. There is a very real political undercurrent toward removing all guns from the hands of the American public. This move is one which is
in direct violation of the provisions of the U.S. Constitution and the Constitutions of most of our states. It is a move which should be squelched by the American
