The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) holds the distinction of being the oldest
and largest civil rights organization in the United States. It has, in fact, been in existence for over one-hundred years! Like any organization, the NAACP has its strengths
but it also has its weaknesses. The NAACP was first envisioned in 1909 (NAACP, 2012). Currently, the organization has in
excess of 500,000 members and supporters (NAACP, 2012). Although the name is typically associated solely with blacks, the fact is that people of all races are involved with the
NAACP. Indeed, the organization was founded not by blacks but by whites (NAACP, 2012)! Mary White Ovington and Oswald Garrison Villard were just two of the original white
founders (NAACP, 2012). They realized that an organization was desperately needed in order to address the atrocities that continued to plague the country well after the end of the
Civil War and the emancipation of those that were once held in slavery (NAACP, 2012). In 1909 a call was put out for help in addressing such wrongs as
lynchings and it was initially answered by over sixty people (NAACP, 2012). Only seven of the original attendees at the first meeting were black but these included such notables
