is a novel filled with all sorts of elements that makes for a very enjoyable read. It is also a book that, bearing in mind the culture of the author,
speaks of the Indo Caribbean people. The following paper examines the representation of these people through the eyes of Naipaul, the type of language used in the novel and how
it contributes to the story, and the role of women in the novel as seen through the character of Leela. The Mystic Masseur One of the things that
makes Naipauls story so entertaining is his characters. And, in these characters we can surely find aspects of caricatures, but that does not necessarily mean that his presentation of the
characters offers us a non-sympathetic look at them. We can be amused by the wonderful uniqueness that these people possess, be entertained by their ridiculous simplicity, but we do not
respect or admire them any less. In essence, Naipaul has the ability to offer us characters who seem real and in this he is offering us normal individuals in bizarre
situations perhaps, but normal individuals we can find ourselves sympathizing with. What makes these people sympathetic in many ways is the fact that they are normal people with very
humorous realities. For example, we have the Great Belcher, whose words are sometimes nothing more than a burp. This is humorous, but it makes them no less a human being
because of that. However, at the same time the reader could well argue that Naipaul is simply offering a satirical look at these people, at their ridiculous dreams and adventures.
Above all this is an entertaining book and as such is not necessarily one that is aimed and bringing us a serious commentary on the people, the Indo Caribbean people.
