this novel so abruptly stops (due of course to the sudden death of Dickens) and leaves readers wondering (Review of The Mystery of Edwin Drood, 2003). However, I believe
that close examination of motives and actions prior to Droods death leave no other reasonable alternative, other than Jasper, as the killer.
We see from he beginning of the story how Jasper feels about Rosa Bud, and this clearly sets the stage for his motive (Review of The Mystery of Edwin Drood,
2003). He has great affection for her and is furthermore annoyed by the fact that Edwin, who is supposed to marry her, doesnt feel anything for her. Jasper
cannot imagine this and it serves to fuel his discontent. Mr. Jaspers breathing was so remarkably short, thus discreetly
does Mr. Tope work his way round the sunken rock - when he came in, that it distressed him mightily to get his notes out: which was perhaps the
cause of his having a kind of fit on him after a little. His memory grew dazed (Dickens, 2002, p. 8).
He must wonder to himself why someone like Drood, who doesnt even love the lovely Rosa, should get to marry her
when in truth it wouldnt mean anything to either of them. And here he is, madly in love with her, so "getting rid" of Drood clearly makes sense on
the part of Jasper. Furthermore, Jasper is an opium addict, and I believe this clearly had an impact upon his
