Essay / Research Paper Abstract
A 3 page paper providing a general overview of the three types of muscle tissue. Muscle tissue is that which holds together the larger framework of the human body and enables us to move at will when functioning properly. There are over 600 muscles in the human body, most of which are under the direct control of the individual. All muscles share in common the means
by which they receive fuel and instruction. Nerves link each muscle to the brain and the spinal cord, along which instructional impulses travel from the brain. The circulatory
system provides nutritional needs and transports waste products away from muscle tissue. There are three recognized types of muscle tissue. Striated muscle
tissue is that which is present in the greatest quantity and is responsible for voluntary movements. Smooth muscle tissue is associated with internal organs other than the heart; cardiac
muscle tissue comprises the heart. Striated Muscle All muscles regardless of type exert force through contraction and associated energy transfer. Interestingly, muscles
can only contract: they "pull but they cannot push" (Muscle System Overview). Comprising 23 percent of the female body and 40 percent of the male body, striated muscles are
the skeletal muscles that, in conjunction with bone and tendons, provide a shape to the overall "package" and allow us to maintain our heads erect and to sit upright.
