Blockbuster stores and their competitors. Renting DVDs is economical. However, while it is the case that watching films at home is cheaper in the long run, a viewer misses the
movie experience, something intended by the filmmaker. When going to the movies, one sits in a darkened room with other viewers-strangers for the most part-and is first greeted with advertisements
and coming attractions. Sometimes, an employee walks around to collect money for a particular charitable cause. Also, while waiting, people are getting comfortable and usually munching on popcorn or candy.
The atmosphere is one of comfort. In the summer, the air conditioning is blasted and people sit and watch while eating the junk food they often pass by in the
real world. In fact, the ambiance of the theater creates a surreal world where people forget their troubles. Indeed, what generally comes on the screen is unreal, despite the fact
that one may be watching a realistic drama. Films are entertainment and take one away from their mundane lives. The atmosphere in the theater is part of the movie experience.
Watching a film at home, unless one is watching on a giant screen and the phone is off the hook, is subject to interruptions and is quite different from the
theater. It is true that some people today do have very large television sets, but that is different from the huge screen that is present in the theater. Also, the
sound is generally very loud and this avoids possible distractions. Further, at home, one may stop the film to take a phone call or go to the bathroom. This is
not possible in the theater. One has to sit for the duration and if they leave for any reason they will surely miss some of the film. Although this may
