has revealed a widespread move from the rural areas of the country to the cities, in recent years this trend has been reversing itself somewhat. There are numerous reasons
for that reversal. People in general are attempting to escape the crime and pollution of the cities. They are looking for better school systems and a better environment
in general in which to raise their families. The suburbs provide this environment. The thesis can be presented, however, that in order to live in the suburbs:
people must retain access to the goods and services they desire and they must be within commuting distance of their jobs. Technological developments have now made that possible for
many and so has the shift of many industries to areas outside the city, a shift that has put jobs within commuting distance of the more desirable living areas.
Americas cities are certainly not without their problems. In Cleveland, for example, there are many problems confronting the city dweller. These include
discrimination on the basis of race, immigrant relations, crime, transportation, and a number of other issues. In many ways each of these issues are complicated by the transitional nature
of the cities themselves. Changing land use patterns, changing occupations of the citys residents, changing income levels, crime, racial conflicts, types of transportation which are available and in predominant
use, and other amenities which are available both within the city and outside shape the morphology of the city itself (Thrall, McClanahan and Elshaw-Thrall, 1995).
