When considering why the language use started to decline Crystal (2003) notes that language domination is associated with social domination, which may initially be linked to military might, but reflects the dominant culture, where it is not adopted it may influence and adapt the remaining languages. When Latin was evolved as the dominant language Ancient Rome a dominant social force, although many countries have been subject to conquest, the Romans became a dominant social influence. However, by the 12th-century the Roman Empire West had shrunk significantly, and been a declining influence for many centuries, relinquishing much of the social influences that were present in the past . Kreis (2009) notes that by the 12th-century the Latin language had evolved and the way that we used was different from that of ancient Rome. In effect, the way in which language had changed impacted on the way that texts that were more than 1200 years old were read. The potential of this influence known can be appreciated by looking at the English language, and the way in which this has transformed and changed over the last 100 years (Kreis, 2009). This resulted in a gradual shift, and reflected not only the lower level of influence of Rome, but also the declining influence of the church, which was a Bastian of the Roman Empire and a major proponent of the Latin language. During the 12th and 13th century writers and poets started to utilize the vernacular language of a way of expressing themselves, finding it is easier as well as open up the works to a much wider audience.
