It may be argued that the origins of autobiography arise not from the desire to record, but as a result of an internal dialogue with the self, narrating and explaining life in the context of the cultural landscape. The writer in producing the autobiography undergoes a number of processes, speaking, writing and addressing issues within the self and wall as within the culture that they live, including signs and as symbols of the culture and its values. The autobiography is a performance, it is also the selective representation of the author to the reader, this may be perceived as an honest representation, it may be selective, the decision comes about as a result of the internal voices. The way in which this comes about can be illustrated with many works, if we look at Frantz Fanons autobiography, Black Skin, White Masks. The context of the authors life is interpreted and placed in the broad cultural context, looking at Fanon, there is a very clear concept of the unfairness of the society and the inherent racism that he saw around him, when he writes "There is a fact: White men consider themselves superior to black men. There is another fact: Black men want to prove to white men, at all costs, the richness of their thought, the equal value of their intellect. How doe we extricate ourselves?" (Fanon, 1977; 10).
