people. Critics insist that its not a true tragedy because Willy Loman isnt a towering figure; his fall doesnt move us the way Hamlets does, for instance. But it still
touches us, because as he unravels we can so easily see ourselves doing the same. There are many symbols and themes in the play: diamonds are mentioned frequently; the
stockings that Willy sells are present in many scenes; sports and sports equipment are referred to repeatedly; the idea of a fresh start is represented by the seeds that Willy
buys near the end of the play. But in this paper we want to consider the automobile, which plays a very important part in the play. Discussion First, Willy is
a salesman who is on the road; he drives all over New England, putting hundreds of miles on the car in a single trip. The car therefore becomes a symbol
for Willy himself, and his ability to make a living for his family. But things are not going well for Willy now, and so the car starts to change. Willy
drives a Studebaker, but in the past he had a Chevrolet, a red one. As he tells his wife Linda about his latest trip, he says "I opened the windshield
and just let the warm air bathe over me" (Miller 14). But then he suddenly starts to run off the road: "Im tellin ya, I absolutely forgot I was driving
(Miller 14). We dont really know what to think at this point, because Willys illness isnt yet that advanced; he merely seems forgetful, and as hes in his sixties, that
