that a good leader needs to be one of integrity and one of foresight. One could argue that a good leader needs to have, ultimately, a deep concern for the
people and perhaps a bigger concern for the people than themselves. In short, there are many qualities that can make a good leader and to truly narrow it down to
one trait is all but impossible. However, if one were to narrow it down, through necessity, to just one trait it is possible to find something that could cover many
areas of concern. Being that this is the assignment, based on two readings, it is necessary to narrow it down to one trait. The following paper examines perspectives from George
Orwells Shooting an Elephant and Politics and the English Language and then illustrates what Orwell may well be arguing in terms of the most important trait for a leader.
The Most Important Trait in a Leader Throughout much, if not most, of Orwells Politics and the English Language the reader does
not necessarily see the topic of politics, as it relates to government, bur rather the politics of language. However, he does introduce the notion of what makes for a leader,
through a symbolic manner, as it involves language. He notes, "The great enemy of clear language is insincerity. When there is a gap between ones real and ones declared aims,
one turns as it were instinctively to long words and exhausted idioms, like a cuttlefish spurting out ink" (Orwell [1]). In essence, it appears as though Orwell is arguing that
