saying comes from the French: " Plus de choses changent, plus quils restent la m?me chose." But what does it mean? It seems to be a contradiction in
terms. Lets tackle this by considering one or two things that change frequently, fashion and social customs. Twice a year, designers bring out new clothing lines, sending the women
who can afford to do so into paroxysms of spending to keep up with the trends. This fall, the trend is toward "Boho chic," which, translated from designer into
English, means rich colors and lots of glitz coupled with things like peasant skirts and gypsy scarves. Will this trend last? No. But its very likely that
it will come back in a few years time. The end result is that the designers have changed the style from what they told us we should be wearing
last year, to the Boho Chic we are supposed to be wearing this year. In so doing, they have fundamentally changed the entire "look" of those who enjoy keeping
up with fashionable trends, but this look will soon be pass?. In other words, it will change quickly. But it will come back at some point, slightly altered
perhaps, but recognizable. It really wont have changed at all. Social customs change too, but they are much more important than fashion. Today its no longer considered shameful
for a girl to have a baby out of wedlock; 40 years ago she would have been labeled a tramp. That is a major change in outlook. And
yet, underneath it all, have things truly changed? Society may no longer condemn unwed mothers, but the concern for the welfare of the child is still of paramount importance.
