We are frequently confronted with perplexing problems in the turbulent world in which we live. We are often required to make decisions which involve various philosophical
tradeoffs and balances. Todays world is all too often characterized, in fact, by the need to sometimes trade one aspect of what we consider right or wrong for another
aspect. The warfare in which we are engaged today, for example, presents the problem of the justness of killing. We are instructed by our religions that killing is
wrong yet we find ourselves killing, or supporting the process of killing, on a more and more frequent basis. The recent killing of Saddam Husseins sons provides an example
of a growing tendency for the American public to accept killing in certain situations. Most Americans apparently support such killing, in fact. It is not the intent of
this paper to argue whether this support is justifiable or not but it does become pertinent to point out the fact that most of this support is rendered on the
basis of the belief that Husseins sons were violent criminals whose lives had little positive value. While killing becomes at least theoretically more justifiable in such an instance, how
do we deal with other situations of killing? How do we justify killing when the individual being killed is in fact innocent of any wrongdoing? Would the killing
of one innocent individual be justified if that killing were to save the lives of two innocent individuals? That question can be addressed from a number of philosophical frameworks,
