why it endures while other books fade away. This paper discusses some of the moral and ethical implications of the novel. Discussion The main story, of course, revolves around Dr.
Victor Frankensteins obsession with creating life, the "monster" he builds in his quest, and the horrific results that come from his efforts. Perhaps the first point to consider is whether
Frankenstein had any right to do what he did in the first place. Today there is a huge debate underway about the ethics of cloning, which has been banned by
the Bush administration, even though the science is hardly advanced at this point. Its often seen as "playing God." Victor can be said to be doing the same thing: he
is trying to create life, a process ordinarily reserved to God. Or, for those who are not religious, a process reserved to nature. The book never resolves the question of
whether or not this is a proper pursuit for a scientist, but the terrible things that happen to both Frankenstein and the creature suggest that it is not. There is
also the question of obsession. Frankensteins obsession with his experiment leads him to shun his friends and almost work himself to death. Also, because of the gruesome nature of the
experiments, he has to be very circumspect about where he lives-another broad hint that he should not be doing what hes doing. The question that a reader might contemplate here
is the fact that obsession is always unhealthy; Frankensteins disgrace and eventual death, as well as the deaths that surround him, are a direct result of his fixation on his
desire. And Shelley makes it clear that he sees himself as a god of sorts when she puts these words in Frankensteins mouth: "A new species would bless me as
