The Monroe Doctrine is a critical component of American history. Implemented during the administration of President James Monroe, the Monroe Doctrine was actually Monroes annual
address to the U.S. Congress (Martin 93). Monroe delivered that address on December 2, 1823 (Martin 93). The Monroe Doctrine encapsulated a foreign policy authored primarily by Secretary
of State John Quincy Adams. It sought to exclude European powers from the Americas and established the policy of US isolationism, the policy that our country would focus solely
on maintaining its borders free of outside interference. This policy held with us only temporarily, however. In reality, we had begun to move away from the ideology of
isolationism in its purest form even as early as the Spanish American war. Never-the-less, that early focus has impacted us all the way into contemporary times. It is something
that we have consistently judged ourselves against and we slowly became a more important world player. Our founding fathers established our country
for the express purpose of being independent from outside intervention. This establishment was political but it was greatly facilitated by geography. Indeed, the primary reason that we originally
