When looking at the money supply process the first consideration is to define what is meant by then money supply, so this can be applied to the concept. There are different measures of money supply. The M1 measure is the amount of physical money that is in circulation and the retail sight deposits, these are deposits that easily accessible, as well as the wholesale sight deposits (Nellis and Parker, 2006). The M2 is the same as the M1 but there are also the longer term deposits included, such as the time limited deposits. In the US this will also include time limited deposits that are under $100,000 (Nellis and Parker, 2006). As the definitions progress they are gradually including more money supply. The M2 is therefore a measure of money and close substitutes for money (Nellis and Parker, 2006) M1 and M2 are often used for forecasting purposes. M3 is the M2 definition with more additions, timed deposits are all included and the private sector holdings of shares and deposits and other liquid assets are all included. M1 and M2 are the most common measures that are used (Nellis and Parker, 2006). In this paper both M1 and M2 can be used.
