up some of the most dire and void imagery. The following paper examines the characteristics presented in this poem that relate to the modern world and its presence as a
wasteland. The paper also examines if T.S. Eliot offers any hope in sich a wasteland. Characteristics One of the primary characteristics is that which is related to the
society. It seems that the society has lost its faith, and thus its hopes and identity. It is also "a society still coming to terms with the horrors of war
and its disastrous consequences to social identity" (The Wasteland is Essentially Concerned with the Breakdown of Society). In the society at the time there were many institutions that seemed ultimately
destroyed. The ideals and the nerves of the individuals were equally dismal and this offers up the strong characteristic that speaks of the lack of hope on the part of
a society. With no hope there is no one to truly care about the direction the modern world was taking. There was no individual to really care if the modern
world was worth living in. Interestingly enough, one critic indicates that this is where Eliot uses the symbolism of the Holy Grail myth. "To express what Eliot saw as
this living death, he borrowed symbols from the myth of the Holy Grail" which is a tale that involves a very desolate and sterile land, a place of no growth
