and part special-effects extravaganza, Star Wars gave a generation raised on Vietnam and Watergate--a generation with enough existential and moral angst to overflow Kierkegaards Denmark--an image of unambiguous heroism" (pp.52).
Mythology and the power of myth according to one of the great modern scholars of the topic, Joseph Campbell, is the "literature of the spirit." According to Campbell (1988),
the great power of myth is its ability to enter an individuals mind and allow them to see its relevance and lesson as applied in their own life. The
"Star Wars" movies certainly all fit Campbells assertion that myth gives a person a certain level of perspective about the events they experience in both their daily lives and in
the long-term application of the myth. In fact, Campbell (1988) was convinced that "we dont have a comparable literature to take its place" (pp.4). According to Campbell (1988): "These
bits of information from ancient times, which have to do with the themes that have supported human life, built civilizations, and informed religions over the millennia, have to do with
deep inner problems, inner messages, inner mysteries, inner thresholds of passage, and if you dont know what the guide-signs are along the way, you have to work it out yourself"
