wireless providers are entering the market to provide not only voice calls, but also data connections for both internet access as well as for the entry into third generation
mobile technologies. The current market is growing, in 2002 there were 44.1 million subscribers, which was an increase over 2001 of 2.3% (Euromonitor, 2003). The services that are offered
in this sector can be divided into two main sectors, the prepay services, where credit is purchased and then used, and the contract where calls are billed and a line
rental is paid for. The pre paid market s the largest with a 63% market share in 2002 (Euromonitor, 2003), increasing by 70% in 2003 (Oftel, 2003). The
market is an oligopoly. Oligopolies are an industry where there is little competition and the industry is controlled by a few, powerful companies. They may be aided by high entry
and exist barriers. In this industry in the UK there are four dominant companies only. Over the last few years some apparent new players have emerged, such as Virgin and
alto offering by supermarkets such as Sainsburys and Tesco. However they are not true providers they are suppliers that are piggybacking on other suppliers networks. For example, new entrant Virgin
may be seen as a separate company form the main four, it is, but they still make use of the T-Mobile investiture and as such are not a true provider.
