kin is a dysfunctional father. However, over the course of Clemmons novel, Huck learns to grow beyond his limited experience, which means that he has a good chance of not
growing up to replicate his fathers life and his mistakes. In the next century, writer Flannery OConnor created a character who is arguably the "flip side" of Huck, the psychotic
killer known as "The Misfit" in her short story A Good Man is Hard to Find. Unlike Huck, the Misfits dysfunctional childhood as left him psychotic, with no hope of
redemption. In the book in which Clemmons first introduces the character of Huck, Tom Sawyer, he is seen as having total freedom from any responsibility. However, this is primarily
because Huck is viewed in that book through the eyes of another child. In Huck Finn, Clemens gives this character more depth and Huck becomes much more realistic. After
all, Huck is basically a youngster who is all alone in the world, and what appears to be freedom to Tom Sawyer is really a struggle for survival. This is
emphasized in Huck Finn by the introduction of Hucks father. It quickly becomes clear to the reader that Huck is very much in danger of following in his fathers
footsteps. This is demonstrated through the parallels between Huck and his father. In the part of the novel where Huck is abducted upriver by his father, he seems to enjoy
his life with Pap, except for the occasional beating. Huck runs away when his father get drunk one night and chases him about the cabin threatening to kill him. This
is the pivotal moment in the story, and it is in this moment that Huck differentiates himself from the Misfit. Like Huck, the Misfit comes from a dysfunctional family.
