daughter-in-law and their children, who are in an accident. The Misfit and his cronies happen to come along the accident scene. The men are somewhat frightening but seem to be helpful. The Misfit had by that time become somewhat of an icon, similar to Elvis Presley or Chandra Levy, where people are on the look out for this missing character. The grandmother has had an obsession with this man from the start. What ensues is a horrendous series of events. The Misfit is a common criminal and is not concerned with life. The Misfit matter of factly states that it would have been better had this grandmother not recognized him. This is important. While most would construe that as a threat, and perhaps the grandmother knows this, she is seemingly enamored of him and towards the end, suggests he is her own flesh and blood. It seems as if the reader is supposed to believe that to be the case from the tales that he tells about his own life. Yet, this might have been the fantasy of an old star struck woman. To the grandmother, the Misfit is somewhat of a star. Yet, her motivation may be genuine in wanting to save her family. Perhaps she can convince him not to kill anyone, but instead, she only pleads for her own life without much regard for the others. As he has his men kill the rest of the family, the Misfit and the grandmother are seemingly engaged in conversation. Her idea is that whatever happened in the past, the Misfit could be redeemed if he prays to Jesus. While the grandmother has a simplistic take on life, the Misfit has quite an interesting view about Christianity. He says: "Jesus was the only One that ever raised ...
