Discussion The painting that well consider is by Sacchi, painted in 1625, and is an altarpiece in St. Peters Basilica in Rome. The altar is dedicated to St. Gregory and the painting is by Andrea Sacchi, showing the saint as he "shows the faithful cloth stained by the blood which miraculously flowed from the relics of some martyrs" (Altar of St. Gregory the Great). According to the story that accompanies this painting, Emperor Constantine requested an authentic relic from Gregory, who gave a cloth to the Emperors representative (Altar of St. Gregory the Great). The representative rejected the cloth, saying it was worthless (Altar of St. Gregory the Great). But after saying Mass, Gregory stabbed the cloth with a sharp knife, and it bled; it is this miracle that the painting in St. Peters illustrates (Altar of St. Gregory the Great). In his left had he holds the cloth and in his right, the knife; there is blood on the cloth, the red making a contrast to the snowy white. The messenger, who is dressed in a red gown and blue robe, is kneeling in front of Gregory and rearing back in surprise; there are three other men in the background of the painting.
