is a gradual build-up of suspense, tension and mystery which is only resolved in the closing scene. In this instance, the secret is revealed in the ministers final words as
he lies dying, surrounded by members of the community, and still refusing to remove the black veil which he has worn constantly for the greater part of his life.
In order to understand the importance of Hoopers last words, it is helpful
to consider briefly the impact which the veil has had on the small community where he is minister. He has never given any explanation as to why he began wearing
the veil, and although he is evidently aware that it strikes fear and confusion into the hearts of the villagers, he has always refused to remove it even though it
casts a morbid shadow even over festive religious occasions such as weddings. There is nothing frightening in the veil itself - Hawthorne reiterates several times that it is only two
layers of crepe, which on a womans hat would be considered unremarkable and even fashionable. However, for a minister to wear such a thing is strange and out of the
ordinary and therefore the townspeople find it frightening. They have tried on several occasions to discover why the minister wears the veil, but it is only on his deathbed that
he reveals its true meaning and the importance of its symbolism. He speaks first of
the similarity between himself and the other people of the town - Why do you tremble at me alone? . . . Tremble also at each other! - which contrasts
