in China. In "The Dynasties of China: A History" Bamber Gascoigne presents the reader with many different historically important times in Chinas history. One chapter is devoted to the Ming Dynasty. The following paper analyzes the authors work and their apparent intentions in their work. The paper then provides an opinion regarding Gascoignes work. The Ming Dynasty In relationship to the work as a whole we note that Gascoigne (2003) is obviously presenting the book in order to educate people about the dynasties that existed within China, dynasties that are often only recognized by their name and artwork. For the most part people only associate the names with things such as silks, pottery, paintings, and often know very little about the time period and the rulers within that particular time period. In addition, Gascoignes wife has contributed to the book in presenting numerous photographs that put the time periods into context in relationship to the items that people associate with the dynasties. In relationship to the Ming Dynasty Gascoigne offers first a look at the Monguls and how they influenced the beginning of the Ming Dynasty due largely to their marauding nature. It is interesting to note, in the chapter just prior to the one that discusses the Ming Dynasty in depth, how the author indicates that the Monguls returned to their way of life: "They returned with surprising ease to their harsh way of life on the steppes, almost as if they had never fed on the honey-dew of China or drunk their milk in that particular paradise" (Gascoigne, 2003; 152).
