When the great Caesar was struck down, a civil war was over and he was master of the world. The month of the year B.C. 100 in which he
was born, Quinctilis, was afterward called in his honor, July (Kohl, 1973). From all that I have read, it seems quite clear that Caesar was
a remarkably intelligent and cunning politician. He was ambitious and he was motivated; He knew precisely what he wanted and he also knew precisely how to get it.
Caesar was not, however, a tyrant by any means. He was, instead a comparatively soft-hearted leader-- prepared to slaughter his enemies at will but only with the betterment of
his own people in mind. Unfortunately, Caesars interpersonal skills and political talent also proved to be the underlying causal factors of his undoing. Evidently, his colleagues grew envious
of his power and acted not out of any logical reason or in the best interests of the state, but rather out of their own selfish jealousies.
Today, there seems to be little dispute Caesar was one of the greatest figures in history as he took a prominent part in the affairs of Rome from
a very early age. He was a rival of Cicero in what Matthias Gelzer (1968) refers to as "forensic eloquence" and a highly esteemed as a writer, his Commentaries
