Migraine pain is described variously as seething, pounding, irritating and annoying. Regarded by many as just another headache, just another minor inconvenience, migraines can, in fact, be debilitating and result in tremendous societal impact. From time lost at work to time lost with family and friends, migraines cause not only intense pain but also severe personal consequences. Migraines can even be life threatening in that those that suffer from them also suffer from a higher propensity for such potentially fatal complications as strokes (McGillicuddy, 1999). Buring (1995, 129) writes: "Migraine headache is a poorly defined but common neurologic condition estimated to affect between 1% and 10% of men and 3% to 20% of women in the United States each year (Buring, 1995,129)". Prevalent thought in regard to migraine headaches is that there are certain environmental triggers or stresses which act to bring on an attack. These can include things like food, eye fatigue, emotional physical or mental stresses such as: eye fatigue, lack of sleep, too much sleep and hormonal changes in the body such as associated with the reproductive cycle (Evans, 1997). Additional environmental stress stimuli which have been linked to migraines include the weather, odors, and altitude (Evans, 1997). Migraines are characterized by a number of physiological symptoms.
