Compare this to an accomodationalist policy. Given current world events one cannot doubt that a
definite clash is underway between the middle east and the western world. Indeed, this is not solely a contemporary development but one which is rooted deeply in the historical
interaction of the United States and other western countries with middle eastern countries. This interaction has varied over time, however, from an accomodationalist approach to a confrontationalist approach.
Since the Gulf War, however, the interaction of the U.S. with middle eastern countries has been characterized more by confrontationalist policy than by accomodationalist policy. The Gulf War is
the first international crises which occurred after the culmination of the Cold War. This affair was probably one of the most televised and reported upon events in history.
Americans watched the convoys of military personnel, both regular service and reserves travel across the highways of our nation en route to the various ports from which they would be
shipped out to the Persian Gulf. This war and its horrors, brought to fruition the real questions of: What is the proper role of the United States in the
world today? What are the roots of instability in the middle east today and the role which should be played by the United States? Was the Gulf War necessary?
