A quick scan of todays headlines reveals a multitude of articles pertaining to
the Middle East. As would be expected articles on the situation involving American military involvement in the region comprise the majority of those articles. The purpose of this
paper is to review five such articles and relate why the topic is relevant to a study of contemporary politics.
Byman, Daniel. (2005, Sep 8). WMD Terrorism and Proliferant States. Congressional Testimony. This article
is a transcript of the testimony delivered to Congress by Professor Daniel Byman of Georgetown University Security Studies Program. Bymans background includes work for the "the intelligence community, the
9/11 Commission, the U.S. Congress" and "other branches of the U.S. government". His testimony, however, was prefaced with the fact that it was his own opinion and not a
reflection of his past governmental involvement. He proceeds to identify Iran as the most active sponsor of terrorism in the world. He contends, however, that despite that reputation
Iran is "not likely to pass chemical, biological, or nuclear weapons to terrorists". The issue of non-conventional weapons, of course, is
of huge importance in contemporary politics. Not only does the international community not have adequate provisions for bioterrorism/chemical attacks, that has been the case for a number of years.
